1857, September 2 & 11: Showers of Sugar in Lake County, California
The Legend:
On September 2 and 11, 1857, showers of sugar crystals fell in parts of Lake County in the state of California, in the United States. The crystals were from one-eighth to one-fourth of an inch in length, and "the size of a goose quill." It was indeed sugar, for some of the ladies in the area used it to make syrup!
My Source
The earliest I've been able to get on this legend so far is 1881, and the author of that account half suspects this to be a 'canard,' ... a joke. I'll dig back and see if I can locate some newspaper sources to confirm or deny the incident, but for now I consider it to be unreliable.
