French - Old Words and Meanings

When translating old French manuscripts from 1400 through 1700, you run into a lot of words that are no longer in use or have had their modern spellings changed. Here's a list of the ones I've had to track down to help with translation.

  • abbattit = strike.
  • estal = a place or location something is set in, such as a stand for a statue or a stall in a marketplace. It can also mean to stand still in one place, or to stand firm in a resolution.
  • prioient = praying.
  • sortoient = 'coming out.' Old conjugation of the verb 'sortir.'
  • surprenans = surprising.
