Cartoon of Millerites waiting to Ascend to Heaven
This illustration comes from a Puck Magazine from 1901; this copy of the cartooon has been taken from the PHDin History website [Link Here].
The cartoon parodies the expectations of the members of the religious movement called the 'Millerites,' who preached the world would end in 1843. It shows them waiting on rooftops in white robes, hoping to get a head start on their being raised to Heaven as the world ended and they were saved. It's not likely such a scene actually occurred; but ridicule of the Millerites was quite vicious, as the movement stole followers away from established congregations.
