2012, October 11 (ca.): Big Eyeball Washes Ashore on Florida Beach

Eye

Oh, the things you can find on a beach! On Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, Gino Covacci was walking on Pompano Beach in Florida, USA, when he came across the above eyeball; Covacci, who noted the eyeball was fresh, called his find in to the Wildlife Conservation Comission, who had the eyeball placed on ice and sent to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg. Overall speculation on the original owner of the orb ranged from "a giant squid to Bigfoot."

On Monday, Oct. 15, everyone had the answer they were waiting for... the Institute stated that the eye "in all likelihood" came from a swordfish. Based on visible straight line cuts around the eye, it was assumed it had been cut out by a fisherman and discarded in to the sea, only to wash ashore later.
